The story of this film set in late 1970’s and 80’s era and revolves around Arya aka Kabilan, whose father died due to boxing. Now, Kabilan’s mother refrain him from boxing since his childhood. Still, desperately Kabilan watches all the local boxing matches happening in his town. Kabilan belongs to Sarpatta clan whose boxers are being beaten consecutively from several years by Idiyappa clan. Now, Sarpatta clan loses all the honour and respect over the years by losing matches. Idiyappa clan coach Duraikannu openly says Sarpatta clan coach Pasupathy aka Rangan that he better stop taking part in boxing matches as they always loose it. Idiyappa clan’s biggest boxer is John Kokken aka Vembuli who always defeats Sarpatta clan boxers.

After facing so much defeat and insult, Sarpatta clan’s coach Rangan says to Duraikannu that he needs one more tournament between both the clans, if Sarpatta’s boxer loses this time then their clan will never take part in boxing tournaments. Now, all eyes are on coach Rangan and finally he chooses Kabilan for facing against Vembuli. Will, Kabilan able to fight it out and win the match for Sarpatta clan is what this story is all about. The question here is, will Kabilan mother allow him to wrestle? You need to watch this film to get all the answers.

The early reviews of Sarpatta Parambarai is highly positive. This movie has got an early reviews in a range of 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5.

Bollywood Crazies Opinion: The larger than life feel of this movie is what I loved about it. The retro feel has somewhat remind me of 70’s and 80’s era films. The production value and set designs were up to the mark. The makers have spent lot of money to make this film looks a big film. I am amazed with the character of Arya who essayed a boxer role. Just a week ago on July 16, I also saw Hindi film Toofaan which was also based on Boxing. Still, I felt more connect with Arya’s character of Kabilan rather than Farhan Akhtar’s character of Aziz Ali. I am not talking about both the actors’ hard work on their body, but overall, I find more connect with Kabilan as the role is meatier. Both the films are good, still I felt Sarpatta Parambarai is what I am more involved into. The local connect with its characters are always a special one, here to you get easily into the life of Kabilan hardship to get in the boxing ring. The retro colour tone of this film works for me. I liked the camera angles and the longer shots that the makers have taken in this film. The detailing work in set designs and costumes have made this film a classy one. Despite its almost 3 hours runtime, I pretty much enjoyed the movie and it reminds me of the films in the 70’s and 80’s era where the film name appears after 15-20 minutes after its initial start. As the name Sarpatta Parambarai appears after 20 minutes of its actual start. I got emotionally connected with this movie but still the story was very predictable. I loved the vision of the director who wants to give us a big film of 3 hours that will give us adrenaline rush.

Sarpatta Parambarai movie budget hasn’t been revealed by the makers but it would reportedly be around 40 to 45 crores maximum. Yes, it’s a costly film as it is set in the 70’s and 80’s era and creating a whole new world is a difficult task.

This film has been written and directed by Pa Ranjith. It has been produced by Shanmugam Dhakshanraj. The cinematography of this film has been done by Murali G and the musical work handled by Santhosh Narayanan. This film has been edited by Selva R K.

Altogether, Sarpatta Parambarai is one of those films that will up the graph of Arya as an actor and we wish to see him more in diverse roles. It is highly engaging films with some superb performances.

Last Word: Watch it for Arya and Pusupathy roles. Also watch it for its magnum opus appeal and boxing story.

Bollywood Crazies Ratings: Sarpatta Parambarai Review- Distinction (70 percent out of 100).
