Maharaja is the latest Tamil film which has been released in theaters on June 14, 2024. It has got low screen count in theaters in Tamilnadu but the word of mouth has helped this film to grow and it has turned out to be a big hit. It even get limited release in Hindi market from June 28, 2024. On July 12, Maharaja movie got released on Netflix and it has turned out an instant hit there too and becomes the most watched movie on Netflix so far in India. Maharaja is an action drama film with a runtime of around 2 hours 22 minutes.
Story: The story of this film revolves around Vijay Sethupathi aka Maharaja who is a barber. His wife died early and now he lives with his daughter. Maharaja’s daughter was strong in sports and so she left home for a week for sports competition. Meantime, Maharaja lost a garbage dustbin, which was very special to him. He reached police to find a missing complaint of the dustbin. He even offered police to give 7 lakhs if they find the lost dustbin. Will he able to find the dustbin with the help of police is what this story is all about. Another important character in this film is (Bollywood Film director) Anurag Kashyap aka Selvam, who also runs a electrical store. He is even a big criminal who commits crime with the help of his two friends. Selvam also has a wife and a small child to look after. How a dustbin is linked with both Maharaja and Selvam is interesting to know. There are lot of twists in this movie if you get fully invested in it.
The movie also features Natarajan Subramaniam aka Inspector S Varadharajan,Mamta Mohandas aka Aasifa, Divya Bharathi aka Maharaja’s wife, Singampuli aka Nallasivam and many others.
The early reviews of Maharaja is brilliant and they are in a range of 4 to 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. On Bookmyshow, Maharaja holds 9.4 ratings out of 10 given by 1 lakh plus viewers. On IMDB, Maharaja holds 8.7 stars out of 10 stars.
Bollywood Crazies Opinion: The story and direction is brilliantly done by the director. The director is the hero of the film as he made a remarkable film for Indian Cinema that audience will not forget anytime soon. The story flows in a non-linear manner and till the last moment you didn’t know what is the motive of the Maharaja. The screenplay is good and even editing makes it look much better. There are hardly any loopholes or issues with the film, it is a good watch. As I have watched the dubbed Hindi version, I felt the dubbing could have been better. I missed Anurag’s voice as it looks like someone has else dubbed his voice. I think, in original language, the audience would appreciate the movie in much better way. Talking about performances, Vijay Sethupathi is exceptional but I feel Anurag has overshadowed him in the climax sequence. Such films hardly being made in India, it is a great lesson for the filmmakers to watch it and learn how to make a movie more interesting while presenting in a different way. Even, I failed to understand the movie untill the last 15 minutes which was unexpected. Such movies are rarely made and it has everlasting impact on the audience. After watching this flick, I find it like I am watching something similar like Old Boy (2003) or Sairaat (2016) which also stunned me the same way. I must appreciate the director to take a risk of casting Anurag and Vijay in a film together and the risk paid well. Now I think, Anurag Kashyap should become full-time actor, as he delivers better than some so called good Bollywood actors. We Bollywood people failed to know the potential of many good actors, and the latest in the list is Anurag for sure. Right from the production, background music, everything comes to place to deliver audience the best result called Art Cinema. I think, if this film could ever get remake in Hindi, than Maharaja character must be played by Vijay Raaz and the evil one by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. There is also a snake shown in this movie twice, which is also a metaphor to the film story which tells that snakes don’t recognize their own babies. You will understand the last line only when you will watch this movie.
This film has been written and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan. It have been produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Sudhan Sundaram. The cinematography has been done by Dinesh Purushothaman and the editing work helmed by Philomin Raj. The musical score has been given by B. Ajaneesh Loknath.
Maharaja movie budget is reportedly around 20 crores and it has already grossed 108 crores gross worldwide so far.
Altogether, one of the best piece of cinema in 2024 and it must be watched by all without further delay. You can watch it on Netflix, it is now streaming.
