Independent Female Director Kalpana Lajmi Passes Away At 64

Independent Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passes away in Mumbai at 4.30 am today. In 2017, she was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. She was known for directing women oriented films like  Rudaali, Chingaari, Daman and many more.

Known for directing films on the lines of Parellel Cinema, Rudaali was one of his biggest hits. Released in 1993, Dimple Kapadia won national award for her portrayal of Shanichari. Rudaali was also Indian official entry sent for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards.

Kalpana Lajmi, 64, has directed her last film Chingaari in 2006 starring Sushmita Sen, Mithun Chakraborty and Anuj Sawhney. She also directed Daman with Raveena Tondon.

In her early days, she debut in Film Industry as an assistant director of veteran film maker Shyam Benegal almost 30 years ago. When she detected cancer, she was financially helped by Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan and Neena Gupta.

She also written a book on Bhupen Hazarika – As I Knew Him, as she was his manager for a long time. She will be remembered for her films.
