A lot has been said and done about Padmavati film. Even before its release, protestors across the nation have protested against this movie for a complete ban. There is no official proof that Queen Padmavati or Padmini story is a real one. Date back in 1540, Indian poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi has written a poem called Padmavat. Noted Historian S Irfan Habib says that there is no record of Padmavati and it is just a fictional character made by Poet Jayasi.

As per the Padmavat poem, Rana Ratan Singh attended the Swayamvar of Queen Padmini, where he defeated a fighter in a sword battle. He won the battle and also won Padmini’s heart. They got married. The poem further details that, Raghava Chetan was one of the talented artists in the court of Rana Ratan Singh, who also used to perform black magic power to target the rivals. When The King got to know Raghava’s evil side, he banished him from his Kingdom.

Raghava Chetan later met Alauddin Khilji in Delhi and told him about Chittor fort. He also described Khilji about the beauty of Queen Padmini and encouraged him to capture Chittor Fort. This has tempted Alauddin to take a look on Queen Padmini. After this, Khilji army laid siege to the fort and he conveyed a word to Ratan Singh that he wanted to see Queen Padmini. The king and the queen agreed to it on one condition. The condition was, a mirror was placed in one of the rooms of The Chittor fort, so that Khilji can only seen Queen Padmavati’s reflection on the mirror. Khilji arrived at the Chittor Fort by hiding his army around the After seen her in mirror, Khilji was mesmerised with her beauty and decided to take her with him.

Alauddin Khilji has soon captured Ratan Singh and took him with his army. He sent a message to Queen Padmavati that he will release the king only if she agrees to come with him. After that, two Rajput generals-Gora and Badal made a plan and told Khilji that Queen is agreed to come with 100 palanquins, which is full of maids. But, there were no maids in the palanquins, it was an army of soldiers. These soldiers fought bravely with Khilji’s army and brought back Ratan Singh.

This trick has infuriated Alauddin Khilji who later attacked the fort and killed the king and his army. After that, Queen Padmavati with her maids performed “jauhar” (self-immolation) after loosing her honour to Alauddin Khilji.
