Kalank Review: A Periodic Drama That Has No Soul

Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapoor starrer Kalank movie has released worldwide today. It got 5300 screens worldwide out of which, 4000 screens were for India. Talking about the film in a brief than, it is a slow burner and it will test your patience every now and then.

Starcast: Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Kiara Advani, Sanju Dutt, Kunal Khemu

Story: Set in 1944 in India, where India was on the verge to get divided into India and Pakistan. There were riots between Hindi and Muslims over various issues. Though, it is a romantic triangle story but it has a historic backdrop to it. The film revolves around Varun, Alia and Aditya. Sonakshi Sinha has an extended cameo role, so thus Sanjay Dutt.

Music, Editing, Screenplay:

The songs in the film have justified the story and its characters. Madhuri Dixit’s Tabah Ho Gaye song is one of the most beautiful songs of the film. The editing work is decent and the film could be cut short to 20 odd minutes. Currently the runtime is 2 Hours 48 minutes. The screenplay is very beautiful, especially during Dussehra Festival. The production design is top notch but still the film lacks soul.

Cinematography And Direction:

The shots have been taken beautiful and that is one of the plus point of the film. There were many beautiful shots in the film that can fill your heart with great joy. The director did tried his best after his hit film Two States. Still, he could have made this film a bit short. There are many issues with the direction too, which needs to be taken care of. As the audience couldn’t able to relate emotionally to the story.

Final Verdict: 3 Stars (last half is for Sanjay Dutt – Madhuri Dixit Duo)
